As a Back in the Groove Again coach and travel advisor at TravelOnly, I recently (April 13-20, 2024) embarked on an exhilarating 8-day journey to the captivating Yucatan Peninsula with G Adventures. Let me share with you the highlights of my unforgettable experience.
The "Highlights of Yucatan" excursion offered a perfect blend of cultural immersion, adventure, and relaxation, all at a budget-friendly rate. This classic-style trip boasted comfortable accommodations and gentle physical activities suitable for individuals of various fitness levels. Our intimate group, under the guidance of our esteemed Chief Experience Officer (CEO), Carlos, comprised a maximum of 16 travelers hailing from diverse corners of the globe, including Australia, England, the United States, Canada, and Germany.
Our adventure commenced in the vibrant Playa del Carmen, where we convened for a warm welcome meeting led by Carlos. Here, amidst camaraderie and excitement, Carlos outlined the week's itinerary, shared invaluable safety tips, and provided general guidelines for our journey ahead.
The following day, we embarked on a tranquil excursion to Isla Holbox via shuttle and ferry. The serene ferry ride transported us to this picturesque island paradise, where we savored the opportunity to explore its pristine beaches, vibrant murals, and laid-back ambiance. Optional activities, such as bioluminescence tours and boat excursions to nearby lagoons and bird sanctuaries, further enriched our experience.
Our itinerary then led us to the awe-inspiring ruins of Chichen Itzá, where we embarked on a guided tour of the ancient Mayan marvels, including the iconic El Castillo and other significant structures. Amidst this historical backdrop, we indulged in a delightful homemade meal at an affordable price. Our journey continued to Izamal, affectionately known as the Yellow City, where we partook in tamale preparation and embarked on an orientation walk. En route to Mérida, we made exhilarating stops at cenotes for refreshing swims and cave explorations, which proved to be an absolute blast.
Upon arriving in Mérida, our knowledgeable guide led us on an insightful orientation walk around our hotel, granting us free time to explore the city's vibrant streets or venture to nearby attractions, such as the Uxmal ruins. In Mérida, some travelers opted for an optional excursion to explore a ruin near Tulum, further delving into the region's rich history and archaeological wonders.
Our journey culminated in Tulum with a captivating guided tour of the Mayan ruins, followed by leisurely free time to savor the town's charm and allure. Overall, the expedition provided a harmonious balance of cultural immersion, historical exploration, and leisurely pursuits amidst the breathtaking landscapes of the Yucatan region.
As a final note, breakfasts were graciously included in our package, while lunches, dinners, drinks, and tips were self-funded. Our travels were facilitated by a shuttle, which, while equipped with air conditioning, occasionally experienced technical issues.
